Maria Mena was a mere child when her first single was released. She was a sensation in her native country with her album Another Phase, recorded at the age of 16.
I'm always leary when it comes to new music, especially from young teenage artists, but Maria Mena is an exception to this rule.
Only 18 when she recorded WHITE TURNS BLUE, Maria Mena was already a star in her mother's native Norway at the time of the album's 2004 debut.
Music
Mena, who has written her own songs since childhood was discovered by her father, a professional musician. Mena describes herself as an artist and works to stay open-minded to all styles of music.
She has proven that she's not afraid to break her own boundaries and incorporate many styles and ideas into her music. Her original voice and music have created a new take on mainstream pop/rock.
She doesn't have the greatest vocal range but then again good music doesn't have to involve high notes.
Her performances are refreshingly free of clutter, mainly because her music is so rich on its own.
Her Songs:
"I just write songs that I would want to listen to. One song can create one emotion or several" says Maria
One day (before she was a star) her father asked her if the song she was performing was a track she'd learned from MTV. He was both surprised and delighted when she told him it was a song she'd made up on her own. On a whim, they decided to cut a demo of that song, "My Lullaby," which Maria had written at age 11 to express her feelings of pain and loss surrounding her parent's divorce.
Mena sings sincere and heartfelt songs from her own experience, and provides a channel to the emotions of adolescence and to life's deeper feelings. Maria's gift for music is something which one can only fully appreciate after really listening to her songs and absorbing them. Her somewhat raspy, smooth tenor adds a nice touch to the songs.
